Input the grade you received (or expect to receive) for each subject. The calculator automatically applies the correct point values.

Your total CAO points appear instantly, with a complete breakdown showing how each subject contributes to your final score.

The CAO Points System Explained

Irish colleges use the CAO points system to decide who gets into each course. Your Leaving Certificate grades are converted into numbers called ‘points,’ and colleges set minimum point requirements for their programmes.

Every grade from H1 to H8 (Higher Level) and O1 to O8 (Ordinary Level) has a specific point value. Higher Level subjects give you more points than Ordinary Level for the same grade, rewarding students who tackle harder material.

Your top six subjects count toward your total score. This means you can focus on doing your best in your strongest areas. Some subjects, like Higher Level Maths, come with bonus points to encourage students to study important skills.

Here’s what each grade is worth in the CAO system. Remember: your best six subjects count, and Higher Level Maths gets an extra 25 point bonus for grades H1 through H6.

Smart Subject Choices for Maximum Points

Make strategic decisions about your Leaving Cert subjects

Not all subjects are created equal when it comes to CAO points. Understanding which subjects offer the best opportunities can help you reach your target course. Here’s what you need to know about the most popular choices.

Mathematics: Your Bonus Points Opportunity

Taking Higher Level Maths is one of the smartest moves you can make. Students who achieve H6 or better receive an automatic 25-point boost – that’s equivalent to improving your grade in another subject by nearly two levels. Even if maths isn’t your strongest subject, this bonus often makes Higher Level worth the challenge.

Sciences: Essential for STEM Careers

Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Agricultural Science are must-haves for students aiming at medicine, engineering, or science degrees. Most of these courses require Higher Level science subjects, so plan accordingly. These subjects reward students who can handle complex concepts and practical work.

Languages: Strong Point Potential

Modern languages like French, German, and Spanish can be excellent point-earners, especially for students with good memory skills. Many students find languages more manageable than sciences at Higher Level, making them strategic choices for maximizing your total.

Humanities: Build Critical Skills

History, Geography, Economics, and Business Studies develop the analytical thinking and writing abilities that colleges value. These subjects often have more predictable grading patterns, helping you plan your point targets with confidence.

Top Tips for Maximizing Your Points

Consider Higher Level Maths for the 25-point bonus – it can make the difference between getting your first choice or not.

Pick subjects you genuinely enjoy and feel confident in – enthusiasm leads to better grades than choosing subjects just because they seem easy.

Mix challenging subjects with ones where you can excel – you need strong results in at least six subjects.

Check specific course requirements before finalizing your subject choices – some degrees need particular subjects at Higher Level.

Don’t overlook LCVP (Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme) – it can replace a weaker subject and add valuable points.

COMMON PITFALLS

Picking subjects based solely on what friends choose instead of your own strengths and interests.

Skipping Higher Level Maths without carefully considering the significant 25-point advantage it provides.

Loading up on too many difficult subjects without ensuring you can achieve high grades in your best six.

Forgetting to check which subjects are required or preferred for the courses you want to study.

Waiting until sixth year to think about CAO points instead of planning from fifth year onwards

From Points to College Places

Use your calculated points to make smart application choices

Each course has a ‘cut-off point’ – the score of the last student who got a place in the previous year. These numbers change annually based on how many students apply and how many places are available. Use cut-offs as a guide, but remember they’re not guarantees for future years.

Smart students include a mix on their CAO application: a few ‘reach’ courses above their predicted points, several ‘target’ courses matching their expected score, and some ‘safety’ options below their points. This approach gives you the best chance of getting a place you’ll be happy with.

The CAO application opens in November and the normal deadline is February 1st. You can change your mind about course choices until July 1st (the ‘change of mind’ period). Late applications are possible until May 1st but cost extra. Plan ahead to avoid rushing or missing deadlines.

Use our calculator throughout the year to track your progress. After mock exams, you’ll have a good idea of your likely final points. Research courses with cut-offs near your predicted score, and don’t forget to look at course content and career prospects, not just the points needed.

Don’t Forget About LCVP

The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme might be the point-booster you didn’t know you needed. Many students don’t realize LCVP can count as one of their six best subjects.

LCVP combines classroom learning with practical work experience and project-based assignments. You can earn up to 66 points for a Distinction grade. If your seventh-best subject would normally contribute zero points to your CAO total, LCVP can step in and add significant value instead.

POINTS AVAILABLE:

• Distinction: 66 points

• Merit: 46 points

Pass: 28 points

WHY CONSIDER IT?

Beyond the points, LCVP develops real-world skills that employers and colleges appreciate. Students gain experience in areas like enterprise, work preparation, and career planning – all while potentially boosting their CAO score.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How many subjects count toward my CAO points?

Only your best six subjects are used to calculate your total CAO points. This means you can have a bad grade in one or two subjects without it affecting your final score, as long as you do well in six others.

What’s the maximum CAO points I can get?

The theoretical maximum is 625 points: 600 points from six H1 grades, plus the 25-point Higher Level Maths bonus. In practice, very few students achieve this perfect score.

Do I have to include Irish in my six subjects?

No – Irish doesn’t have to be one of your counted subjects for CAO points purposes. However, many courses require a pass in Irish for entry, so check individual course requirements carefully.

Can I use predicted grades with this calculator?

Absolutely! This calculator is perfect for estimating your potential points based on predicted or mock exam grades. Many students use it throughout fifth and sixth year to track their progress.

What if I’m repeating the Leaving Cert?

The calculator works the same way for repeat students. Just enter your actual or expected grades. Remember, when you repeat, you can use your best result from either sitting for each subject.

Are bonus points automatically included?

Yes! Our calculator automatically adds the 25 bonus points if you select Mathematics at Higher Level with a grade between H1 and H6. You don’t need to do anything extra.

How often do course cut-off points change?

Cut-offs change every year based on supply and demand. A popular course might have higher cut-offs if more students apply, or lower cut-offs if fewer apply. Always check the most recent year’s figures.

Can I trust this calculator for important decisions?

Our calculator uses the official CAO points system and is regularly updated. However, for final decisions about college applications, we recommend also checking with your school guidance counselor and the official CAO website.
